On Oct. 2, 1967, Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, becoming the first black to serve on the high court. Marshall received his law degree from Howard University in 1934, and began a distinguished law career with the NAACP in which, along with other NAACP attorneys, he successfully argued 29 cases before the Supreme Court. The best known case being the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954).
