Time to Grow Up

The Republican Party is in turmoil and searching for its ideological soul. Traditional conservatism and compassionate conservatism are not true allies. Hardcore social conservatives, or at least most of them, are not secularists. They are also, obviously, not fiscal conservatives. This flies directly in the face of traditional small government conservative values. The social conservatives have no problem with government interference in the lives of average citizens if it furthers their theocratic/anti-science vision of America. Democrats are frequently blamed for being Nanny Staters. Obviously, the current version of the Republican Party is the party for Daddy Staters.

Maybe its time for a new party. The New Federalists, as it were. I do believe the Federal Government has a place beyond national defense, but the Democrats and most especially the Republicans have over-reached.

What say you? Is it time for a new party?

Let the Big Government Conservatives like Reverend Huckabee and his ilk figure out where they fit in. (If, indeed they do.)

NEWSFLASH for the Huckabee crowd: The Earth was not created a thousand years after the Sumerians invented glue. Jesus didn’t walk with the dinosaurs. And, yes, your distant ancestors did rise up from the primordial soup. Sorry, but them is the facts, and its about time you grew up and accepted them.

The Evolution of Peanut Butter

I am a very strong supporter of 1st Amenedment rights. With the obvious exception of yelling "Fire!" in a movie theatre we here in the USA can say just about anything we want to say and the government cannot abrogate that right. We can say whatever we want to say. No matter how stupid or ridiculous we might sound. We are not often disappointed by the utter brilliance of those who exercise that Right. Are we? To wit:

State and local rights

The terms "states rights" and "local authority" once meant, at least to the more Liberal mind, the notion of sheet wearing Klansmen and their government allies in Dixie. Fifty years of federalizing criminal and civil law, however well-intentioned, has now come full swing. The current swine occupying the White House have made a mockery of the term Justice. Most civil rights cases being brought by the DOJ are for so-called "reverse discrimination." My favorite is the desire of the Republicans in Congress and their Christianist supporters trying to enact Federal legislation barring same sex marriage. Huh? Isn't this a matter for the states? What happened to the conservatives? The answer might be found here.

But I digress. We see more and more states moving to upend the damage done to America by the right wing agenda. My rebellious heart tells me the good people of this country are coming to their senses. Enough is enough. Stay out of my bedroom. Stay out of my pocket book. Stay out of my life! The big bad wolf is not going to eat me. I also don't think me seeing to guys making out is going to threaten my marriage to a woman! Good grief, Charlie Brown. What are we heterosexuals so afraid of? I don't think my children will be turned gay. They are either gay, or they are not. I have no control over my children's sexual preference. Both of my daughters are very young. When time comes, I want to be proud of themselves. I want them to be proud of each and every aspect of who they are. Pretty simple really. We cannot be who we are not.

Republicans often say the government can't do anything right. They get elected because it is our tendency to want to be left alone. Then. The. Mantra. Becomes. A. Self-fulfilling. Prophecy. To wit: 2001-2006. Almost complete Republican control for nigh on six years. In my estimation, this period has been disaster on a scale we may soon regret.

Democrats tend toward nanny state bullshit but we can control them a hell of lot easier than the corporate appeasing Right wingers.
