Senators Jim Webb and Chuck Hagel proposed a post-WWII style GI Bill in yesterday's NYT. Young men and women are making great sacrifices for this country and we owe them our gratitude. In an email from Senator Webb's office he says:
Hard to argue with that logic.
Enacting a more robust G.I. bill akin to that of the World War II era is not only the right thing to do, but its the smart thing to do, in terms of investing in the economic health of our country.
Other than the flippant criticisms of our "failure" to take Baghdad during the Persian Gulf War, one sees little discussion of an occupation of Iraq, but it is the key element of the current debate. The issue before us is not simply whether the United States should end the regime of [Saddam Hussein], but whether we as a nation are prepared to physically occupy territory in the Middle East for the next 30 to 50 years. It seems like the only people deserving an up or down vote, according to Republicans, are washed up Political Hacks vying for jobs with the former Cheerleaders administration. Today the Republican's would not allow Jim Webb's troop rest bill an up or down vote.
