Watch this bombshell clip of former US Attorney David Iglesias at a book signing here in Albuquerque. He has harsh words for Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White (the likely Republican nominee to run for Heather Wilson's open seat) and so-called voter fraud. He has some well chosen words about Wilson as well.
This General Election cycle will be a very unpleasant for Republicans in almost every corner of the country, including New Mexico. I can't think of a group more deserving of our scorn and derision.

The Uh-oh Moment
But it looks like Heather Wilson didn't get Larry's memo about Dick.

Lambs to the Slaughter
Looks like the Republicans are lining up to take Saint Pete's seat. Heather will announce today, and Pearce will "strong consider" a run for the seat.
The Democrats will wait to see what Bill is going to do first. We should know by February 6th. The day after the Big Primary.

Heather & Pete
With the announcement of Pete Domenici coming this afternoon, Heather Wilson has decided to throw her hat in the ring for the seat. The very first thing the Democrats should do is start hounding Heather Wilson to denounce the American Conservative magazine article entitled American Sycophant written by conservative Andrew Bacevich. If she can vote to condemn MoveOn for their tasteless ad about Petraeus she will certainly want to defend his honor from that scathing attack.
Heather has been traveling around the state quite a bit this Spring. And someone is running an ad (since the SCHIP final vote) encouraging people to call Heather and thank her for voting FOR the legislation. To steal a line from Clarence Thomas: Whoop-de-damn-do! What with her being a maverick and all.
She's still got all the baggage from voting for the War, continued support of it, and her silence on the issue of torture. You know, REAL criticism of the former Cheerleader and his henchman. Oh, and the little matter of a phone call might hurt a bit as well.
So Heather: Bring It On!
Anyone seen my MISSION ACCOMPLISHED banner anywhere?

NM and the Open Senate Seat
The implications of Pete's reported retirement announcement go well beyond the Senate seat. Look for Heather Wilson (R-NM01) to throw her hat in the ring for the Republican nod, and Tom Udall (D-NM03) to announce for the Democratic nod. Udall's House seat is safely blue. But Heather is in a district that has a slight Dem advantage in registration. She squeaked by on less than a thousand votes against a truly awful opponent. Democrat Martin Heinrich (a young and rising star for Democrats) is already actively campaigning for Heather's seat.
Of course, many New Mexicans want Bill Richardson to end the madness and come back home to run for the seat. But Bill is Bill and his massive ego may override his ability to just say no to being a Presidential candidate.
