Early next week the journey begins.
The Club for Growth began running attacks ads against Tom Udall. They are lame and full of the typical right wing smears and lies. Any chance we could have a public hanging of Grover Norquist? What a filthy rat-bastard.

Marty vs. Marty
Marty Chavez announced his desire to take the Senate seat being vacated by Pete Domenici.
“Let me be clear -- I'm proud to be a Democrat.”Now if you would act like act like a Democrat instead of the Prince of the City someone might take you serious.
(Marty Chavez on NM FBIHOP, Nov. 1, 2007)
"I have every intention of endorsing Pete Domenici, and I'm going to catch a lot of heat for that.”But, but, but ...what I meant to say was ...
(Marty Chavez, Albuq. Journal, May 28, 2006)
It must suck to be Marty now that Tom Udall is preparing to throw his hat in the ring.

Udall
Tom Udall has apparently decided not to run for Domenici's open seat. According to the NYT:
Representative Mark Udall is considered a strong contender to be the Democratic replacement for retiring Republican Wayne Allard in Colorado — the site of the Democratic presidential convention, no less. His cousin Tom Udall was considered a possible Democratic contender for Mr. Domenici’s seat in New Mexico, but has decided against a race.
C'mon, Tom! We need you. Ring. Ring. This is New Mexico calling.

NM and the Open Senate Seat
The implications of Pete's reported retirement announcement go well beyond the Senate seat. Look for Heather Wilson (R-NM01) to throw her hat in the ring for the Republican nod, and Tom Udall (D-NM03) to announce for the Democratic nod. Udall's House seat is safely blue. But Heather is in a district that has a slight Dem advantage in registration. She squeaked by on less than a thousand votes against a truly awful opponent. Democrat Martin Heinrich (a young and rising star for Democrats) is already actively campaigning for Heather's seat.
Of course, many New Mexicans want Bill Richardson to end the madness and come back home to run for the seat. But Bill is Bill and his massive ego may override his ability to just say no to being a Presidential candidate.
